My Not to Do List

I am a list maker... And, with a huge transition and move in front of us, I have lists everywhere. Written lists in my day planner. A moving notebook with check lists. Springpad is my new best friend. And on nights like tonight, the evening before my week "officially" starts (does it ever really end when you stay at home?), my mind is mentally preparing for all that I need to do this week.

But after reading this post over on The Creative Mama, I have decided to create a second list in my journal this week: things I am not doing. I am starting tomorrow by making coffee for a friend and doing nothing but catching up on our weekends. I am also choosing to donate the remainder of the items that I was going to try to sell on Craigslist: the hassle and time lost is not worth it with everything that must remain on the to-do list...

By choosing to not do something, I am making a statement about what means the most to me. I recognize that  I don't do "Good-bye" well. I tend to leave with little fanfare, leaving the "goodbyes" and "You meant a lot to me" unsaid. So, this week, I am choosing to let certain chores go by the wayside in order to spend quality time with a friend. And I will let a couple of dollars go unearned in order to have some extra time to spend a couple of hours at the beach with my son...

My beginning-of-the-week list has never looked so good...

Making room...

Our house looks more and more like we are moving soon. There are the empty spaces where we took books off the shelf to sell at the garage sale. There are boxes full of clothes to donate and empty drawers where winter gear used to be.

Cleaning out this space we call home now is cathartic. There is change and purging in my life, too. My police certification (good for two years after I leave a department) expired today. And we signed our foster parent termination papers with our social worker.  Closing the door on what has been my identity for so long on the same day that we officially put the "not now" stamp on our adoption plans is far more challenging that throwing away physical items.

But, like with the sweaters and gloves that have been emptied from the closet, there is an empty space waiting to be filled with something new. Something different and exciting. Something more appropriate for the direction we are pointed in now. Some spaces will remain empty, like the extra chairs at our table, waiting until timing, circumstance and divinity work together to allow us to grow our family. But, in letting go comes new opportunities.

And I am getting ready...

Home is (Not) Where your stuff is...

Or atleast until June 14th...
Yep-we have an official date as to when our pack-out starts! Can I get everything sold/decluttered/divided into the correct shipment in the next month? Um, I guess I have to!
Curious as to how we have to divide up our junk to get sent to us? While our time line is a bit different then the Novaks (Foreign Service family moving to Peru by way of DC), this flow chart is pretty awesome!

In my book corner...

What I am reading...various travel books and Pink Boots and a Machete

Guyana highlights from Pink Boots:
Atop Mt. Roraima in Guyana near the Venezuela/Brazil border

On the edge of Kaieteur Falls, the most powerful waterfall in the world...

While I wouldn't say Pink Boots and a Machete is a literary masterpiece, it is a great story about a girl, that finds a profession in a unique journey. Mireya Mayor goes from NFL cheerleader to National Geographic scientist who discovers new life in "remote" locations like Guyana and Madagascar. She talks about several trips to Guyana in this book and they are all full of scary detailed descriptions of the large spiders, huge otters and other amazing wildlife in the rainforest. I can't wait to experience the beauty shown and described in these books!
